The Phoenicians were situated along the Mediterranean coast from
about 2500 B.C. to 64 A.D., when the territory was absorbed by the
Roman province of Syria. Known as astute traders, the Phoenicians
sailed throughout the Mediterranean and into the Atlantic where their
penchant for doing business helped them establish distant colonies.
Their most notable contribution was the invention of the phonetic
alphabet.
